Assaf began his career in music at the unlikely age of thirteen.
when the small-town Heavy Metal band he led was signed to a label and released an album. In the twenty years since, he has studied classical composition and Jazz performance, with full scholarship, at the Jerusalem Academy for Music and Dance, and has gone on to work with some of Israel’s leading performers and producers. Assal participated in countless concerts and productions, awarding him considerable acclaim among his peers and among Jazz enthusiasts alike, both in his home country of Israel and abroad.
The seeds for the Assef l.evy Group were planted during Assaf’s years at the Academy. “Searching for the right sound”, says Assaf, “is a process that takes years, of playing and listening, exploring sounds and instrumentation, until it is almost visible.
From tinkering with an old accordion we had lying around since we were kids and which we did not know how to play, to Sitar lessons I got while backpacking in India, I can truly say I left no stones unturned trying to produce a unique musical experience”.
Having spent countless hours of rehearsals, Jam sessions, and performances, it all came together. I and four other insanely talented musicians went into the rehearsal room and jammed our fingers and minds to the bone. The result was something we all had a part in creating but it had a life of its own.
a sound that is new and fresh, with something to say and the nerve to say it.
